Adam Peaty, 26, received “hateful messages” after his near kiss with Katya Jones, 32, on Strictly Come Dancing. The Olympian has admitted he was “playing a character”, telling those who sent abuse that he has “no respect” for them.

I was playing a character.

Adam and Katya lit up the Strictly dancefloor last month with their sizzling Argentine Tango.

The pair were “so in the moment” according to the Olympian that some viewers claimed they “almost kissed” which resulted in a series of hateful comments online.

Adam acknowledged the comments at the time but has readdressed the situation in an interview with The Times.

Speaking to Julia Llewellyn Smith, Adam said: “I knew my role, I knew what I had to do.

“I was playing a character and I’m not going to do that halfheartedly.”

Adam admits he knows how to get into a champion’s mindset due to his experience as an Olympian, wanting to put his all into Strictly too.

He had a very clear message to social media users who sent him “abuse” at the time.

Adam said: “I have no respect for you because you’re hiding yourself [behind another identity online].

“The whole experience [of social-media abuse] was a learning curve. We’d not been through this before.”

Not only did Adam and Katya receive abuse online, but so did his girlfriend Eirianedd Munro.

The pair met whilst he was at university and welcomed their son George in September last year.

At the time of the hateful messages on October 17, Adam posted a string of three pictures in view of his 593,000 Instagram followers.

The first image was a picture of Katya and Adam performing, with the two following pictures of his son George.

He captioned the post: “We go again, thank you so much for all your support! Such a relief!

“To everyone who sees what they want to see, your comments have real life consequences.

“I will not be lowered or overcome by your gossip.”

He continued: “Protect your energy.

“Great to spend some much needed time today with my boy.”

Adam and Katya were unfortunately voted out of the competition in week seven, finishing ninth.

You can watch Strictly Come Dancing tonight on BBC One at 6.35pm.
