GBBO’s tense finale saw Crystelle Pereira “make history”, as she served Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith a raw focaccia for her Mad Hatter’s Tea Party-inspired showstopper.

Unfortunately, her bake had failed to cook all the way through and left Paul questioning whether the “inedible” bread had been in the oven at all.

Crystelle has now addressed “the elephant in the room” in an Instagram post.

She wrote in view of her 78,000 followers: “Yes, I made a raw focaccia in the final. Please don’t try that at home folks. I think that’s a bake off first so I’m glad to have made history.”

Twitter user RProud89 said: “Crystelle 100 percent had that won until the focaccia.”

Anastazia echoed: “I am sad Crystelle’s unproved focaccia dream was real.”

And comedian Michael Fry added: “Regardless of the result tonight Crystelle has still won my hand in marriage #GBBO.”

In her candid post, Crystelle also congratulated Giuseppe, who was crowned the winner.

She said: “The biggest auguri [congratulations] in the world to Giuseppe. He is the most humble, naturally talented, hilarious and genuine gentleman out there.

“I have felt so honoured and blessed to have baked alongside him for 10 weeks. His bench was behind mine in week one, and I knew straight away that he was a shining star.

“I could not be happier or more proud to call Giuseppe our winner. I love you so so much, bravo.”

After host Noel Fielding announced Giuseppe as the winner, the Italian baker was overcome with emotion.

He said: “All I can think of is the reaction I’m going to get from my mum and dad.

“The fact that everything I have done to deserve this comes from his heritage… I think it’s going to be the best thank you note I could possibly send him.”

Many Bake Off fans were delighted with Giuseppe’s win. Ella said: “Rooted for Giuseppe since the first episode! So glad he won.”

Steve Tough added: “After the injustice of Jürgen going home last week, so glad Giuseppe won. Absolutely deserved it!”

And Lauren remarked: “I’m so glad Giuseppe won #bakeoff.”
