Dancing on Ice couple Brianne Delcourt and Kevin Kilbane are over-joyed to be expecting again, but have described how the precious first few weeks of the pregnancy was a concerning time.
Pro skater Brianne had an unexpected complication, which she talks about exclusively in new magazine as she announces her pregnancy.
Brianne, who already has a daughter Olivia with Kevin, experienced bleeding before discovering she had a haemorrhage next to her placenta.
“We’d never heard of a haemorrhage in pregnancy so when you’re told that you think the worst,” says former Premier League player Kevin, 44, who was a celebrity paired up with Brianne and now works for The Sports Network channel in Toronto as a football analyst.
“It was an extremely worrying time,” adds Brianne.
They learned there was a complication at the second ultrasound.
Brianne says: “I was a month along when I found out and I went for my second ultrasound quite early. We found out I had a haemorrhage and it was right by the placenta. I was bleeding for a week so I went to see a doctor. Automatically we thought something was wrong or I was miscarrying."
Brianne recalls that at first the doctors assured her that it was sometimes normal and can go away.
“I went for a follow up and mine had gotten bigger and I was in a lot of pain. They put me on bed rest but that only lasted a day as it’s pretty hard to do nothing when you’ve got two kids. It was an extremely worrying time and it was way before 12 weeks so it was really scary. I then went back a few weeks later and thankfully the haemorrhage had cleared up. They said it could have been a slight injury from when I didn’t know I was pregnant as I was doing things like water skiing. I constantly bled every single day for three weeks.”
It was obviously a scary time for Kevin, too.
He says: “We’d never heard of a haemorrhage in pregnancy so when you’re told that you think the worst. It was worrying to see how the pregnancy was progressing and the first 10 weeks involved a lot of appointments and scans. Bri was told not to bend down and pick the girls up, but, of course, she didn’t listen to a word they said and it is hard with kids. But once we were told the haemorrhage had shrunk everything became more relaxing. What’s important now is just to get Bri through the next 20 weeks of the pregnancy.”
