Dan Walker, 43, was left in hysterics after Carol Kirkwood, 58, a self-confessed cat lover, appeared alongside a giant cat photo in her last weather forecast of BBC Breakfast on Tuesday morning. The meteorologist regularly posts photos and shares stories of her own moggies with her followers on social media but the larger than life feline came as a bit of a surprise to viewers.

Taking to his Instagram and Twitter accounts, Dan shook his head in disbelief at the chaos on set during his absence.

The Monday – Wednesday host has been off this week, replaced by Charlie Stayt who presented the show alongside Louise Minchin.

And it seemed he can’t wait to get back to the famous BBC red sofa to prevent a feline take over.

“I have one week away from #BBCBreakfast and it all kicks off,” he penned on social media along with the hashtag “#GiantMoggy”.

Alongside a snapshot of the forecast in question, Carol also looked surprised to see a giant ginger and white cat appear on the backdrop behind her.

The weather presenter often features photos sent in from fans of the show, and this time is just happened to be her favourite animal.

Rushing to the comments section, fans giggled as they recalled it was a particularly funny moment of the program.

“This made my day,” one remembered.

Another added: “Carol’s face is a picture.”

“This was so funny!” a third laughed.

Others referred to the snap as a scene from the Goodies where comedians Tim Brooke-Taylor, Graeme Garden, and Bill Oddie have to tackle a gigantic white kitten which is terrorising London.

The Scottish meteorologist has spent nearly three decades at the BBC and is a beloved member of the on-air line-up.

Carol, who is known for her cheeky gaffes and occasional innuendos, revealed that she wouldn’t ever quit the BBC.

In an interview with Radio Times, she insisted she would never consider giving up her role on the breakfast show.

She said: “I would never give up the weather on Breakfast.”

Carol admitted it would be a hard task for bosses to get rid of her.

She quipped: “If they showed me the door, I’d hang on by my fingernails.

“As long as Breakfast wants me, I’ll be there… I love it.”

BBC Breakfast airs at 6am on BBC One.
