Eddie Large's son Ryan says late father was 'laughing and joking' before death

The son of Eddie Large, Ryan Large, says his father was ‘laughing and joking’ until the end, just before his death from coronavirus.

Eddie sadly passed away on Thursday at the age of 78 after contracting Covid-19, but that did not stop him from ‘telling jokes’ to staff and visitors at Southmead Hospital in Bristol just before his death.

Speaking to The Mirror, Ryan said: ‘He was always laughing and joking with the nurses.

‘He always showed them a photo of himself and Syd with Ant and Dec because you had all the young nurses thinking, “who is this guy messing about telling me jokes?”

‘He’s meant to be on death’s door and he’s still messing about telling jokes! He was telling jokes literally until his last breath.’

He continued, explaining one of his later father’s jokes: ‘He would say, “Patsy [his wife], get the photo out! See if they recognise anybody!”

‘They’d look at it and say, “oh that’s Ant and Dec!” and he’d say, “who’s standing next to them?” And they’d say, “it’s you!”

‘He’d say, “see!” He used to love doing that.’

Eddie had been in hospital in recent times with heart failure, before contracting coronavirus.

Ryan confirmed the news of his father’s death on Facebook, writing: ‘It is with great sadness that Mum and I need to announce that my dad passed away in the early hours of this morning.

‘He had been suffering with heart failure and unfortunately, whilst in hospital, contracted the coronavirus, which his heart was sadly not strong enough to fight.’

He continued: ‘Dad had fought bravely for so long. Due to this horrible disease we had been unable to visit him at the hospital, but all of the family and close friends spoke to him every day.

‘We will miss him terribly and we are so proud of everything he achieved with in his career with Syd [Little] and know that he was much loved by the millions that watched them every week.’

Eddie was well known for his partnership on Little And Large with Syd Little, with the two achieving success throughout the 1970s and 80s after finding fame winning talent show Opportunity Knocks in 1971.

In 1978 they debuted The Little And Large Show on BBC One, which became immensely popular, before it concluded in 1991.

Although the two later had a highly publicised falling out, they had reconciled in recent years.

Eddie is survived by his second wife Pasty, and three children.
