Oscar-winning actress Olivia Colman, 47, said playing detective at university is how she eventually bagged her husband Ed Sinclair, who she married in 2001. Reflecting on that period of time, The Crown star added she tells her spouse he’s a “lucky man” on a daily basis.

Olivia first met Ed, a producer, at Cambridge University, where they starred in Alan Ayckbourn’s Table Manners.

The actress said she spent six weeks memorising the words to a song he liked and also learnt his timetable.

“I sort of stalked him,” she revealed. “Which I don’t condone. It did work in our case.

“I remind him every day that he is a very lucky man.”

Olivia added she had also spent “three hours” getting dressed every day to impress him.

“He was not aware of what was going on,” she added in an online chat with BAFTA for the National Theatre, attended by The Mirror.

“Eventually I just told his friend to tell him I loved him and eventually his friend did.”

Thankfully for Olivia, her strategy worked out and the couple are now also proud parents to three children.

Known for her witty personality, the Broadchurch star made a joke about Ed during her Oscar’s speech last year.

Olivia returned to the stage to present an award after winning her gong for Best Actress in 2019.

She said on stage: “Hello, there. Thank you for having me back.

“It’s such a pleasure to be here. Last year was the best night of my husband’s life.

“He actually says that. And I’ve given birth three times, so I hope you’re all having as good a time as he did, and as I did.”

The mother-of-three previously admitted she did fall for her spouse the first time they met.

“It sounds really odd, but I did fall in love with him at first sight,” she told The Telegraph.

“When he walked into the room, I just went, ‘That’s him!’

“Mind you, I suppose if he hadn’t wanted me, then I might have gone, ‘That’s him!’ at someone else a week later.”

She added of the couple meeting in their twenties: “For me it was thunderbolts straight away.”

At this year’s Oscars, Olivia was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Father.

The actress plays the on-screen daughter of leading actor Anthony Hopkins, who stars as Dementia-stricken Anthony.

The award was won by Youn Yuh-jung for her role in Minari.
