Johnny Depp ‘to be paid full Fantastic Beasts salary’ despite filming one scene

Johnny Depp will reportedly be paid his full salary for Fantastic Beasts 3 despite only having filmed one scene before being asked to step down.

The actor, 57, announced last week that he was asked by Warner Bros to step down from the role of Gellert Grindelwald after he lost his libel trial against The Sun’s publishers after the paper labelled him a ‘wife-beater’ of his ex-wife Amber Heard.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Johnny, like many Hollywood stars, had a ‘pay-or-play’ contract, which requires him to receive his full salary whether or not the film is made and even is he is recast.

Johnny had reportedly only shot one scene since production began in London on September 20, before the studio’s film chief Toby Emmerich made the decision to cut ties with him following his court case defeat.

The actor had announced he was stepping down from the franchise after being asked to resign by the studio, but vowed to appeal the ‘surreal’ decision.

He wrote in a statement: ‘In light of recent events, I would like to make the following short statement.

‘Firstly, I’d like to thank everybody who has gifted me with their support and loyalty. I have been humbled and moved by your many messages of love and concern, particularly over the last few days.

‘Secondly, I wish to let you know that I have been asked to resign by Warner Bros from my role as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts and I have respected and agreed to that request.

‘Finally, I wish to say this. The surreal judgement of the court in the UK will not change my fight to tell the truth and I confirm that I plan to appeal.

‘My resolve remains strong and I intend to prove that the allegations against me are false. My life and career will not be defined by this moment in time. Thank you for reading.’

Warner Bros also released a statement confirming the role, which Johnny has played since taking over from Colin Farrell in 2018’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald, will be recast.

Fans have called for the role to be reprised by Colin in the upcoming movie, which has been pushed back from its original release date of November 12, 2021 until July 15, 2022 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
