Kate Garraway has said she and her husband Derek Draper are starting a “whole new chapter” after he returned home from hospital.

Good Morning Britain star Kate’s husband Derek was in hospital for more than a year after he battled with coronavirus and the effects it had on his body.

Now, the 53 year old has said she believes her husband, also 53, “will improve” as he continues to recover at home.

Speaking to Times Radio, Kate explained: “It's just a whole new chapter that we're starting on now, which is him at home and seeing how he can recover, seeing how he can recover and where he can go.”

Meanwhile Kate also said she feels Derek, who was almost left paralysed by a rare brain inflammation, will never be “exactly the same person”.

She explained: “I believe he will improve. I think we've all been changed by what we've been through actually.

“The whole country has been changed by what we've been through.

“So I don't think he'll be exactly the same person again. I don't think I will be actually or any of us will be.

“I don't think you will be either. I think we've all been so affected by the pandemic generally.”

The TV journalist, who recently admitted she ignored advice from Piers Morgan, was flooded with support from people across the nation throughout Derek’s ongoing health battle.

Kate even received a personal note from Prime Minister Boris Johnson. She revealed: “Boris Johnson actually wrote a really, really very personal note reflecting on things that he and Derek had been involved in together and his impression of him as a person, and also thinking of me and the children.

“And also Carrie as well, who I think has had a tough time, particularly when Boris was ill and she was pregnant with a first child.

“I think she has had a challenging time dealing with that.

“Mercifully, his health is great now but they must have had some dark moments as well during that period.

“So I thought it was lovely that he felt that he should and could and did actually drop me a note. So that was lovely.”

It comes after Kate revealed her husband Derek can still “barely talk” nearly a month after being home from hospital.

Kate, who shares children Darcey, 15, and Billy, 11, with husband Derek, told Zoe Ball on Radio 2: “He isn’t really able to speak at the moment so he can’t tell them off.

“I have to be the bad guy! They are my heroes.”
