Line of Duty fans have gone wild over a throwback snap of Vicky McClure and Ryan Pilkington actor Gregory Piper following the show’s most recent cliffhanger.

Scenes in last night’s episode of the BBC One series saw PC Ryan Pilkington and DI Kate Fleming, played by Vicky, pointing their guns at one another in a tense showdown, with shots fired before the credits rolled.

And following the nail-biting moments an old photo of Vicky, 37, and Gregory, 23, surfaced on Twitter – and viewers of the thrilling police drama couldn’t get enough.

The photo was from the set of series one of Line Duty, in which Gregory was a child actor and only 13 years old.

“Amazing!” wrote one, while another added: “Oh my God”. A third wrote: “They grow up so quickly”.

Referencing the show’s jaw-dropping cliffhanger, another commented: “What an ending! Those two”.

Series one was first broadcast back in 2012. A young Ryan first crossed paths with AC-12 in series one while running burner phones between the OCG (organised crime group) on his bike.

Gregory also appeared in series five of the hit show in 2019, where Ryan was a part of the OCG.

Later in the series the character slits the throat of John Corbett, played by Stephen Graham, who was exposed as a traitor to the OCG.

And in the finale Ryan was accepted as a trainee police officer, which is how he came to be working alongside DI Kate Fleming and the corrupt DCI Joanne Davison, played by Scottish actress Kelly Macdonald.

DCI Davidson – head of the Murder Investigation Team (MIT) – had lured Kate to a dark lorry car park to discuss her “personal issues”.

Joanne had previously arranged to meet Kate at a bar, but once Kate arrived Joanne said she wanted to discuss the matters somewhere more private.

After arriving in the car park Kate soon sensed something wasn’t quite right, but before she knew it Joanne was profusely apologising before stepping out of the way to reveal PC Ryan Pilkington, who was holding up a gun to Kate.

Viewers of the dramatic programme will have to wait until this Sunday to find out if any of the shots fired were fatal, but many took to Twitter to say they think DCI Davidson ending up shooting PC Pilkington.

“OMG, who else thinks that Jo Davidson & Kate have just shot Ryan! #whoshotfirst #lineofduty” wrote one, while another added: “Davidson or Arnott shot Ryan”.
