Naya Rivera’s ex-husband Ryan Dorsey has defended the actress’s sister moving in with him to help look after his son Josey.
Naya, 33, was pronounced dead in July after her body was found in Lake Piru, California, where she had gone missing on a boating trip with her five-year-old son.
Following the tragedy, Naya’s younger sister Nickayla, 25, was pictured helping Ryan move into a rented three-bedroom property in California.
And after receiving vile comments from trolls, Ryan was forced to post a video to Instagram defending his living situation.
Posting the video with the caption: ‘It’s not always black and white’, the Ray Donovan star said: ‘I can’t believe this is real life and that I’m going to address any of this nonsense.’
Ryan, 37, said: ‘I probably lost a little over 20 pounds. I don’t get good sleep, I’m sad every day when I wake up, I go to sleep sad, every night I’m staring at the ceiling or staring at the wall and I think to myself how lucky I am to still have my mum and have her help out in my life still, and then I think how [Josey] won’t have that same opportunity in his future. It makes me beyond sad.’
Josey was swimming with his mother in the lake, and Glee star Naya managed to get her child back into the boat after getting into difficulty.
Ryan added: ‘He witnessed a nightmare before his eyes and he knows that even if they find her, she’s not coming home’, and explained that Josey asked if his ‘Titi’, or auntie, Nickayla could move in ‘because she’s now the closest thing he has to a mum’.
The actor continued: ‘Because you’re gonna need all the help you can get, as a single parent trying to build your career and navigate this disaster with your child. You deal with it every hour of every day for 80 plus days now…’
Calling Nickayla moving in a ‘temporary situation’, he said: ‘After all [Josey has] had to go through, how could you deny him that? Because of what some strangers might think or say or spew some hatred based on some ill-advised, illogical, misinformed tabloid? It’s sad.
‘I hope you would be as lucky as me to have family on both sides who support and have helped out tremendously and to have a young woman who is his blood, his Titi, who’s willing to put her life on hold and sacrifice things, uproot her situation for the betterment of your child, so when you put your child to bed, you don’t have to always be alone with your thoughts. You don’t have to be sad every day and night, wondering when does it get better.
‘At least you have someone there with you who you can talk to or just sit in silence and be sad with. You don’t have to deal with it completely alone.’
Ryan then dismissed claims he was in a relationship with Nickayla, saying: ‘I wish I was worried about a relationship right now, not thinking about this and living with this everyday.’
Nickayla had previously defended pictures of her hanging out with her nephew’s father, writing on Instagram: ‘In the darkest time of my life, the only thing that is important is my friends & family. Showing up for my nephew even though I can’t show up for myself.
‘Im not concerned with the ways things look because no one can see each agonising moment we all endure [sic].’
Ryan and Naya briefly dated in 2010 before reuniting in 2014 after Naya’s split from Big Sean.
They tied the knot in July 2014 and welcomed son Josey in September 2015, with Naya filing for divorce just over a year later.
They called off the separation in October 2017 but Naya refiled for divorce two months later, with the divorce being finalised in June 2018; the exes shared joint custody of their son.
