New Plant-Based Tuna Set To Arrive in Restaurants in 2022

When it comes to plant-based meat alternatives, it’s not easy to find fish substitutes in comparison to beef and pork. Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat often come to mind, however, plant-based fish are another story. Finless Foods is a company that specializes in cell-cultured seafood but has plans to release a plant-based tuna in 2022.

Finless claims that its tuna is expected to imitate the sushi-grade texture and will be possible to marinate. The company envisions the tuna to be a direct substitute for protein in typical raw fish dishes including poke bowls. Finless Foods says, “Our plant-based tuna offers an option for consumers who can’t eat seafood because of allergies, who think about other health concerns or who just want to enjoy a seafood dish without the catch.”

The company appears to be doing its part to aid in sustainable fish farming. In the past five decades, the global population of common fish like salmon and tuna has declined more than 60 percent.

There is currently no set release date for Finless Food’s fish alternative. However, a recent competitor, Ocean Foods, has released a plant-based tuna and freshwater eel alternative which currently sells at select Whole Foods locations across the U.S.
