Albert Roux has died after a long illness, according to a statement. The French-born chef was known for opening the Michelin starred restaurant Le Gavroche.

The chef passed away on Monday this week, the statement explained.

It said: “The Roux family has announced the sad passing of Albert Roux, OBE, KFO, who had been unwell for a while, at the age 85 on January 4, 2021.

“Albert is credited, along with his late brother Michel Roux, with starting London’s culinary revolution with the opening of Le Gavroche in 1967.

“The Roux family have requested that their privacy at this time be respected.”

Tributes to the famous chef were led by his son chef Michel Roux Jr, who said: “He was a mentor for so many people in the hospitality industry, and a real inspiration to budding chefs, including me.”

The chef is likely to have earned a large fortune during his successful career.

While the exact figure is not known, he reportedly earned around £1.4million

Albert was born in France and trained as a chef when he was a teenager.

He later moved to London and opened the restaurant Le Gavroche with his brother Michel Roux.

The restaurant was much acclaimed and was the first in the UK to win one, two and three Michelin stars.

Serving French-inspired cuisine, it had won all three Michelin stars by 1982.

It was also reportedly a favourite dining spot of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.

As well as producing much-loved menus, Albert and his brother set up the Roux Scholarship to help chefs entering the industry.

He helped train talent including celebrity chefs Gordon Ramsay and Marco Pierre White.

Albert also ran a series of restaurants under his company Chez Roux Limited.

The company had restaurants based across the UK and the rest of the world.

The talent of Albert and his brother did not go unnoticed and they were voted the most influential chefs in the country in 2003.

Three years later, they were jointly given a Lifetime Achievement Award by S. Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants.

Cooking runs in the family and his son Michel still runs La Gavroche.

He has also made appearances on shows including Hell’s Kitchen and Masterchef.
