Experts reveal how often you should change your bedding

How often SHOULD you change your bedding? Experts reveal when to wash everything from duvets to sheets – and the items that need to be laundered every two DAYS

Stacey Solomon sparked debate on Tuesday morning when she and Hits Radio host James Barr discussed how regularly he should change his bed linen.

After the radio presenter said he was considering changing his sheets ‘once a month’, the X-Factor star said: ‘Do you know what? While you are single and enjoying that life, wallow in your own filth for a little while. You’ve got no one to impress.’

However despite Stacey and James’ casual attitude towards changing the bed, experts told FEMAIL leaving dirty sheets on a mattress could cause a number of health issues. 

Abbas Kanani, pharmacist at Chemist Click online pharmacy, told FEMAIL: ‘Proper hygiene is important when it comes to sleeping because dirty sheets can contribute to allergies, skin breakouts, asthma, and disrupt sleep quality.’

Danielle Mason, Head of Product Development at The Fine Bedding Company warned: ‘On the surface, your bedding may look clean, but it can lead to all manner of health problems if not regularly changed so we’d recommend changing your sheets once a week.

How often should you wash your bedding?  

According to the experts who spoke to FEMAIL, parts of your bedding should be changed a number of times a week – while other pieces can be left for longer.   

Bed sheets – once a week 

Pillowcases – two or three times a week 

Pillows – every six months 

Mattress pads and protectors – once a month 

Duvet – once every three months  

 

‘If you have pets or experience allergies from dust mites, it should be every 3-4 days for optimal sleeping conditions.’ 

Abbas agreed, saying that sheets should be changed ‘at most, every two weeks, but ideally once a week. 

‘The is a general guideline which may vary depending on your lifestyle.

‘For example, people who may not sleep on their mattress every day may be able to wash sheets less often.’

Dr Veronika Matutyte, Health Sciences, peachesandscreams.co.uk agreed, saying: ‘Bed room hygiene is very important. It helps prevent the spread of bacteria, germs, infections and diseases. 

‘From an expert’s point of view, bedding should be changed after one or two weeks.

‘The routine is likely different for people with problems such as asthma and allergies and those who experience night sweats. 

‘For such cases, I usually encourage change and washing of bedding once every week to keep the room fresh and clean and to remove potential irritants.’

Abbas and Dr Veronika said there was a plethora of health issues which could come from leaving bedding a mattress on for too long. 

Abbas said: ‘The average person spends about 227,760 hours sleeping in their lifetime, which equates to 26 years.’

‘Dirt, dead skin cells, body oils, sweat and dust mites, including their carcasses and fecal matter can all accumulate on your bedding. 

‘Dust mites can live solely off of dead skin cells and reproduce quickly. If you have skin allergies that are triggered by dust mites, pollen or other microscopic particles, wash bedding in hot water and this will help to kill off dust mites and other irritating microbes. 

Other ways to keep your sheets clean 

– If you want to avoid washing your sheets more than once a week, you’ll have to minimise the debris and other stuff that can settle on your bed.

– Wearing pyjamas or other sleepwear to bed. 

– Taking an evening shower or bath, so your body is clean when you get in bed. As a bonus, researchers have discovered bathing 90 minutes before bed may help you sleep better. 

– Eating your meals and snacks elsewhere. Munching or drinking in bed can scatter crumbs or lead to spills. 

– Saving any ointments and lotions for the morning. 

– Restricting your movements. If you’re the type to toss and turn, you’re more likely to spread skin cells and other debris across the bed. 

– Sleeping with a body pillow can keep your body in one spot

‘They can also make symptoms asthma much worse so it is really important to keep your sheets clean. 

‘When we move around, friction causes dirt and bacteria to enter our pores, which can lead to spots and acne breakouts, especially if we have acne prone skin.’

Meanwhile Dr Veronika said one of the health benefits of changing bedding regularly include reducing the spread of bacteria and fungi bacteria, which can cause diseases like pneumonia, skin infections, measles, influenza, and chicken pox.  

And while Dorothy Chambers, sleep health expert at SleepJunkie.com, suggested changing bed sheets once a week, she said pillow cases should be changed twice or even three times a week. 

Danielle also lamented the importance of washing other items of bedding – including mattresses, duvets and pillows. 

She said: ‘Always check the care instructions, and check whether your duvet and pillows are synthetic or natural, but we’d recommend washing them every few months if you suffer from allergies, or at least twice a year otherwise. 

‘Washing at 60C will kill dust mites, a common cause of allergies, but if you do not suffer from allergies we would always recommend a more environmentally friendly 40 degree wash. 

‘Your sleep environment is one of the main components that strongly affects the quality of your sleep and therefore your health and mood, so ensure you wash your sheets regularly and your filled bedding at least twice a year for a good night’s sleep.’

The expert comes come after Stacey sparked a debate during a radio appearance earlier today. 

The Sort Your Life Out host, who has garnered thousands of fans over her tidying ticks, weighed in on how regularly bed linen should be changed.

Stacey was quizzed by Hits Radio host James Barr, who asked how long he should be switching his bedding now that he is recently single.

The pregnant TV star initially said: ‘Once a week, I’d say.’

James reacted with surprise and Stacey then changed her answer to once a month, encouraging him to ‘wallow in his own filth’.

She then said: ‘Do you know what? While you are single and enjoying that life, wallow in your own filth for a little while.

‘You’ve got no one to impress. You know when you’re single and you don’t have to shave your legs ? So you just go full Gruffalo. I feel it’s the same.’
