Dealing with damaged ends after heat styling? It’s likely you’re missing a key step from your hair care routine. Whether you’re blow-drying your lengths, straightening your hair or using a curling wand, a heat protecting product is a necessity for preventing damaged, frazzled ends and dry, lifeless locks.

Just ask senior hair stylist Bethany, who took to Instagram this week to show the disastrous effects of not using a heat protector – by demonstrating on, wait for it, bread.

In the jaw-dropping clip, Bethany puts a slice of bread into the toaster after applying heat protection spray to one side, and none to the other – showing how heat-styling without protecting your lengths can result in serious damage.

“I’ve got one slice of bread, and I’m going to spray a heat protector on one side,” Bethany says.

The stylist then toasts the slice of bread as normal, waiting for the outcome.

Bethany’s followers were shocked at the results – which saw the side without a heat protector coming out burnt, while the protected side didn’t cook at all – leaving it soft and fresh.

“Look how squishy it is, how protected it is,” Bethany says talking about the side she sprayed the protector on.

“Heat protector works,” she says to her followers.

“It’s so important to use a heat protector.”

Expectedly, the Instagram clip gained a lot of attention from beauty fans who couldn’t believe the results.

“Wow that’s amazing,” one fan commented.

“I’m well impressed,” another said.

While we don’t recommend spraying beauty products on your food, we do recommend investing in a good heat protector for your hair – just like Bethany, who uses Neal & Wolf Guard Heat Protection, £13.75 here.

Unfortunately, Bethany's go-to heat protector is out of stock but we think that the Amika The Shield Anti-Humidity Spray, £20 here, gives equally amazing results.

These days, heat protectors come in all shapes and sizes – with tons of added benefits.

To prevent heat-styling damage and to keep your hair looking lovely and luscious, we recommend a nourishing cream formula, like the Kérastase Resistance Ciment Thermique, £24.80 here.

Simply apply to damp hair before styling to lock in moisture and keep your hair protected from heat styling tools and blow-drying.

The leave-in treatment rebuilds damaged hair while protecting the outer layer from further styling damage.
