How to carve a pumpkin

Pumpkin carving is a highlight of Halloween which allows people to display their creativity in an inventive way.

The tradition dates back hundreds of years to 19th century Ireland when people carved “grotesque faces” into turnips.

Now embraced by the international community, carving acts as an artistic outlet for both adults and children.

A large serving spoon

A pen

A bowl (optional)

To start, choose a large pumpkin and cut around the top of the head with the serrated knife.

Then scoop out the innards (both the seeds and fibres) and discard them.

Those who want to use pumpkin insides for a snack or meal later on should keep them inside a bowl and refrigerate them.

Afterwards, people can start drawing their design on the surface.

Tradition dictates a simple face with angled, triangular eyes, a nose and a toothy grin.

Many websites have compiled printable designs for those who want to try out something slightly more advanced.

After carving out the features, people should deposit a lit tealight inside and replace the lid.

Then they can place it where they choose, either by the window or outside on the porch.

How long do pumpkins last?

Pumpkins feature so prominently in Halloween because they emerge in the autumn months.

A whole pumpkin will last roughly eight to 12 weeks outside the fridge.

Carved pumpkin does not last as long, however, roughly five to 10 days.
