It’s so tempting to just throw all your towels in to the washing machine in one go isn’t it?

However apparently this is not what you should be doing when it comes to washing them.

A towel designer has spoken, telling us that, if we’ve been throwing all our towels in at once, we’ve basically been doing it all wrong.

The lady in question, named Lucy Ackroyd, of Christy, spoke to Tyla to tell them it’s a common mistake people often make.

Lucy explained: “The towels need plenty of room within the drum to breathe and circulate, allowing them to be rinsed and fluffed up properly.

And to get them to that fluffy and fresh standard, Lucy has given her advice, with her first tip being to wash the towels separately.

She said: “When washing your towels, never overload the machine. If you try stuff too many in, you'll end up with a clumped together heap, with moisture pockets throughout, leading to scratchy, stiff towels.

“Make sure to wash your towels separately to your other laundry to avoid any colour or fibres transferring onto your beautiful pristine towels."

You’ll also be able to achieve those hotel-standard towels you’ve been looking for by avoid silicone-based fabric softeners, Lucy revealed.

She said these softeners can lead to build up making towels less absorbent and just the thought of that makes us shiver!

Lucy continued by telling Tyla: “Generally, wash your towels at 40 degrees as any higher can cause them to wear out too quickly.

“However, to remove oils and bacteria that can build up over time, put them through a 60 degree wash occasionally. This routine will allow them to be perfectly hygienic without taking away from their quality and texture.”

For those of you who really do love a fluffy, spa-like towel there’s a slightly bizarre hack you could try too.

Next, add liquid detergent but instead of using fabric softener, add half a cup of white vinegar instead.

Once the washing cycle is finished all you need to do is shake the towels out and leave them to air dry until they are only slightly damp before throwing them in a tumble dryer for a few minutes, which helps with softness and absorbency.
