Reason Chris Rock’s ‘G.I. Jane’ joke angered Will Smith amid Jada’s alopecia battle

The Oscars 2022 created many history making moments including Troy Kotsur who became the first male deaf actor to win Best Supporting Actor.

However the jaw-dropping scene between actor Will Smith and Chris Rock has become the talk of the 94th Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday 27 March.

The comedian, 57, cracked a joke about the haircut of Jada Pinkett Smith, 50, as he likened her to Demi Moore's character Jordan O'Neil who had a shaved head in the 1997 film.

He said: "Jada, can't wait for G.I. Jane 2."

At first, Will, 53, appeared to laugh at Chris's poorly timed joke at the prestigious star-studded ceremony.

But when an upset Jada rolled her eyes dramatically and then glanced at the father of her two children Jaden and Willow, Will stormed up onto the stage to defend his wife.

Will, who later won the Best Actor award for his role in King Richard, marched onto the stage at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood before smacking Chris across the face and warned: "Keep my wife's name out of your f****** mouth."

However many have questioned the 'G.I Jane' reference.

The action film follows a female lieutenant (Demi Moore) who is given an opportunity to become the first woman to train with the Navy SEALs.

Jordan is determined not to succumb to the the pressures of those who want her to fail and shaves her head in order to reinforce her dedication as she becomes 'G.I. Jane'.

Jada, 50, first opened up about her battle with alopecia in 2018 during her Facebook Watch series Red Table Talk in which she described how she was 'shaking with fear' when her hair started to fall out.

Speaking alongside her daughter Willow and mother Adrienne Banfield-Norris, Jada said: "I have been getting a lot of questions about why I have been wearing this turban. Well, I have been having issues with hair loss and I am going to tell you it was terrifying when it first started."

"I was in the shower one day and then just handfuls of hair just in my hands and I was just like: 'Oh my God am I going bald?' It was literally one of those times in my life where I was literally shaking with fear."

Jada decided to shave her head in July 2021 and shared footage to her 11.2million followers which featured the moment she had her hair cut, captioned: "Love and smile. You deserve nothing less."
