The 20 Omicron hotspots revealed as cases FALL in 222 parts of UK

CASES of coronavirus have fallen in 222 places across the UK and this interactive map reveals if your local area is one of them.

Twenty Omicron hotspots have been revealed and with cases in 155 areas still rising – it's the first time in months that infection rates have fallen in more local authority areas that they have risen.

The majority of infection hotspots in the seven days up to January 7 are in the North East and North West of England and the map above shows current infection rates.

The jump in the two regions was also reflected in the R rate data which was published on Friday.

Before the Christmas period, London had the highest R rate, but as data shows that the capital could have passed the peak of infections, the North East and Yorkshire recorded the highest R rate, between 1.3 to 1.6.

It was followed by the North West, which sits between 1.3 to 1.5.

While cases are rising in these regions, most people who are catching Omicron are presenting with cold-like symptoms and experts have claimed that the UK could be one of the first countries to exit the pandemic.

A string of hugely positive studies show Omicron is milder than other strains, with the first official UK report revealing the risk of hospitalisation is 50 to 70 per cent lower than with Delta.

UK Covid cases down 45% on last week as 120,821 new cases reported

Covid booster jabs protect against Omicron and offer the best chance to get through the pandemic, health officials have repeatedly said.

The Sun's Jabs Army campaign is helping get the vital extra vaccines in Brits' arms to ward off the need for any new restrictions.

Public health expert Prof David Heymann said that antibodies from the vaccines, and in those previously infected, means 95 per cent of Brits now having some Covid immunity.

He said the high levels of protection mean it is increasingly becoming a disease Brits can live with.

The ex-World Health Organisation boss said: “The UK is the closest to any country of being out of the pandemic — if it isn’t already — and having the disease as endemic as the other four coronaviruses (which cause common colds).”

Even though 95 per cent of Brits have immunity, people are still catching the bug.

Derry City & Strabane in Northern Ireland continues to have the highest infection rate in the UK, with 5,259 new cases in the seven days to January 7, the equivalent of 3,480.3 per 100,000 people.

This is down from a rate of 4,177.8 for the seven days to December 31.

Middlesbrough has the second highest rate, up from 1,904.7 to 3,111.4, with 4,396 new cases.

Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria has the third highest rate, down slightly from 2,983.8 to 2,946.4, with 1,966 new cases.

Inverclyde has the highest rate in Scotland (2,193.1, down from 2,561.6) and Neath Port Talbot has the highest rate in Wales (2,003.0, down from 2,298.7).

The five areas where cases have risen the fastest are also all in the North East with Middlesbrough, Hartlepool, Sunderland, South Tyneside and Darlington all seeing a large rise in cases.

Dr Mike Tildesley rom the University of Warwick and a member of the Scientific Pandemic Influenza Modelling group (Spi-M) said that the rise in hospitalisations in the North East was concerning.

"Most other parts of the country are about two to three weeks behind where London is in their epidemic profile.

"Particularly concerning is the North East and the North West – if you look at hospital admissions in those two regions they are going up, also the Midlands, where I live, that's also a little bit concerning, so it is a worry."

He added: "On the slightly more positive side, so it doesn't sound all doom and gloom, what we are seeing from hospital admissions is that stays in hospital do appear to be on average shorter, which is good news, symptoms appear to be a little bit milder, so this is what we are seeing consistently with the Omicron variant", he told Times Radio this weekend.

INFECTIONS DOWN

The latest coronavirus infection data for the UK shows that rates are down 45 per cent on figures published last week.

A further 120,821 infections were announced yesterday by the UK Health and Security Agency (UKHSA), compared with a record high of 218,724 reported seven days ago.

The January 4 data included extra cases and death that went unreported from Northern Ireland and Wales over the New Year bank holiday.

But yesterday's figures still mark a huge drop in case numbers week-on-week, indicating the country could be moving past the peak.

Last week Professor Neil Ferguson predicted cases would begin to fall this week.

There had been a steady drop in infections for five days running until Monday, when a slightly higher figure was reported, likely due to the weekend effect.

Deaths, however, have been increasing – with some 379 deaths reported yesterday compared to 49 last Tuesday.

The number of fatalities over the past seven days (1,660) is 81 per cent higher than the week prior.

Upticks in deaths and hospital patients always lags behind a surge in cases.

The number of deaths this winter has not yet come near the peak of previous waves despite a huge surge in Omicron cases over the festive period.
