Meghan Markle has faced some immense criticism, but is she reaching a “breaking point” with all of the negativity? Her recent comment about her critics, while brief, seems to speak volumes.
Markle is under the microscope
Criticism of the duchess doesn’t seem to show any signs of slowing and was most notable when people were on the attack about the way she was holding baby Archie.
Markle faced incredible scrutiny when she and Archie attended a recent charity polo match to cheer on Prince Harry and she appeared to hold the baby awkwardly, with many commenting about how she held him incorrectly, without supporting his head.
Is Markle going to reach a ‘breaking point’?
Through it all, Markle seems to handle herself with class and let the criticisms roll off her back.
Royal reporter Victoria Arbiter thinks that it might reach a point where it’s unbearable, however. She told Today: “As far as her American fans go, there has been a sense there’s not been enough done to protect her — at some point, you have to wonder what is going to be the breaking point.”
Arbiter added: “Yes, she keeps on trucking at the moment but it can’t be anything but incredibly difficult. We need to let Meghan blossom and let her do the job she’s in the Royal Family to do and perhaps hold back on some of the criticism.”
Markle did make a brief comment about it
Markle made one subtle comment but mostly remains silent on the matter, because she has to. Arbiter explained: “It’s very difficult when you comefrom previously celebrity background where a publicist can stand up for you orcome out and say, ‘no, that report is categorically untrue. But categorically, members of the family follow the Queen Mother’s mantra ‘never complain, neverexplain.’ You sort of have to sit back while the world’s media, social media, everyone has become judge and jury.”
Markle might have mentioned the criticism while talking to singer and producer Pharrell Williams at the recent Lion King premiere, however. He told her: “So happy for your union. Love is amazing. It’s wonderful. Don’t ever take that for granted, but what it means in today’s climate, I just wanted to tell you, it’s so significant for so many of us. Seriously. It’s significant. We cheer you guys on.”
She responded that “they don’t make it easy.”
Is the Royal Family protecting Markle enough?
While it’s not surprising that someone in the public eye is so heavily criticized, a lot of American fans think the Royal Family could be protecting Markle more. During Yahoo’s Royal Box podcast, Arbiter said that Americans “love the Royal Family,” adding, “With Meghan in there, they’re very proud — it’s one of their own behind Palace walls.”
Fans do, however, believe that the Royal Family should do more to defend Markle, as Arbiterexplained: “They feel that the Royal Family hasn’t done enough to protectMeghan. And that is a theme that is developing.”
She continued, “They find it hard to understand the RoyalFamily’s philosophy of ‘we don’t say anything because all that does isperpetuate the story.’ There’s a sense there that she’s been under attack andthat someone should have stood up and defended her.”
