'Bachelor in Paradise': This Contestant Stayed Sober Throughout Filming. Here's Why

Bachelor in Paradise is the ultimate dating reality show. It takes fan favorites from both The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, puts them on a remote island together, and gives them unlimited alcohol. It’s just drama waiting to happen.

Paradise is usually where Bachelor and Bachelorette villains go to redeem themselves. Because they are likely to get more screen time on BIP, they have a better opportunity to show audiences who they really are and win over Bachelor Nation.

Often times, it works. Krystal Nielson and Chris Randone were each the villain on their seasons. When they went to paradise, they met each other and fell madly in love. They are now married and have shed their villain titles.

But while Paradise may be the perfect chance for people who got bad edits to redeem themselves, unfortunately, it’s also a place where some people lose their good reputations.

Former Bachelorette contestant Dean Unglert knows this too well.

What happened with Unglert?

Audiences first met Unglert when he was competing for Rachel Lindsay’s heart on The Bachelorette. He was one of the youngest guys in the competition but won fans over with his youthful innocence, his goofiness, and his good looks.

When Lindsay sent him home, fans were clamoring for Unglert to be the Bachelor and from the looks of it, he stood a pretty good chance. That is, until he went on Paradise.

While in paradise, Unglert began dating Kristina Schulman. The two seemed to get along really well together and even spent time traveling when filming for the show had to pause. But the good times didn’t last long as Danielle Lombard came onto the island and caught Unglert’s eye.

What happened next was a very messy love triangle in which Unglert couldn’t make up his mind and pretty much strung both women along. Needless to say, the whole thing was pretty horrible for his image.

Unglert stops drinking

Though Unglert’s problems on the show stemmed from a lot more than drinking, the alcohol probably didn’t help matters. So this time, the 28-year-old decided not to drink on the show.

“For the first time in all four seasons, I’ve stayed completely sober the entire time,” Unglert said on his “Help, I Suck at Dating” podcast, according to a clip obtained by People. “Which is a challenging thing, in that circumstance, because you get bored a lot, all you wanna do is drink, your friends are drinking, all you wanna do is join them.”

“I’m excited to watch it back,” he continued. “For the first time, I’m finally like, ‘I don’t have to worry about being drunk and saying something stupid on camera’ because I didn’t get drunk.”

i took a lot of time to think about whether or not i wanted to do this. it’s been a dream of mine ever since i was a kid and i always told myself it was something i’d have to do. however, as an adult, this tradition doesn’t perfectly align with my ideals. there’s a lot that’s wrong about running with the bulls. but bull fighting and running is a long standing Spanish tradition, one that helps define their culture and, as a traveler, i respect it and wanted to be able to dive in. there were moments where i felt out of place and a little uncomfortable but overall it was a great day and i’m glad i was able to experience it first hand. all that said, i’d love to hear your thoughts! is this something you’d do? why or why not?

Unglert hopes that his commitment not to drink will mean that he will come off better on the show.

“I still said stupid things on camera,” he said. “But I didn’t get drunk and [do it] … I will say this was probably my best season of Bachelor since the first one.”

According to multiple sources, Unglert does end up hitting it off with someone in paradise and may even be in a relationship now that filming has ended, so maybe avoiding the bar actually did help him.
