BBC Breakfast’s Jon Kay replaced in shake-up as show opts for all-female line-up

BBC Breakfast's famous red sofa looked very different this week as the show opted for an all-female line-up in what amounted to a major shake-up.

Jon Kay was absent from presenting duties on Wednesday (January 25), despite usually hosting the show from Monday to Wednesday every week alongside his co-host Sally Nugent.

Replacing him was stand-in host Nina Warhurst, who sat in Jon's usual place for a rare all-female hosting line-up for the show.

Also in attendance was weather-girl Carol Kirkwood for regular updates on the chilly temperatures, ensuring the BBC Salford studios were a place for girl power this week.

Meanwhile, roving reporter Ben Boulos was out on location at a Coventry picket line, while John Watson headed to the studio for some sporting updates.

In another rather rare moment, Nina opened up about her home life – confessing her son regularly asks for tickles, which she hopes he'll "grow out of".

During a segment on chimpanzee behaviour, one expert discussed the grooming rituals of primates, with Nina adding: "Do you know, that sort of looking out for grooming… my son does that!

"He's done it since he was tiny. If he wants to have a tickle before bed, he'll just sort of look at me. So it's really interesting, isn't it, that we have that in common?"

She quickly added: "Hopefully he'll grow out of it!" as Sally collapsed into giggles beside her.
