Below Deck’s stars have never shied away from showing how they feel, both on and off the show. Reflecting on Captain Mark Howard’s death, Hannah Ferrier explained she thought he had passed on continuing on the show, not that he had died.

News broke of Howard’s death last month when season one stewardess Tiffany Copeland posted on Twitter.

She wrote: “RIP Captain Mark Howard, you were a joy to be around.”

Following his death, Ferrier commented on her reaction to the news.

Ferrier said: “He was an amazing captain to work with, and it was so strange because [executive producer] Nadine [Rajabi] actually messaged me.

“And she said like ‘Oh I’m so sorry honey, Captain Mark has passed.’ And I woke up to that.

“So literally my first instinct was ‘Oh, I didn’t know that they were in talks with him to do another season.'”

Ferrier explained how she misunderstood the news at first, thinking Howard simply wasn’t returning to the series.

Initially, she was confused by the sad situation, with Captain Sandy Yawn coming on board the show.

“Then I was like, ‘Oh my god, he passed.’ He didn’t pass on doing the show, he passed. So that was heartbreaking,” Ferrier added.

The star went on to say she has many fond memories of working with Captain Howard, but she did admit she wished she had kept closer contact.

She admitted she was “saddened that I hadn’t kept closer contact,” adding that she wished she had talked to him more.

Ferrier described Howard as a “really good man,” and he was a great Captain to work under.

Back in 2019, the star said while the two did keep in touch, it was only around one message a year.

Ferrier was one of the crew members from the first season of Below Deck Mediterranean, which premiered its sixth season this summer.

Captain Sandy Yawn took over sailing duties, becoming the first female Captain of the entire Below Deck franchise.

Howard passed away at the age of 65, though the reason for his death was not confirmed.

Below Deck Mediterranean Executive Producer Madine Rajabi penned a statement following his death, describing Howard as “a wonderful man, so caring and kind.

“He was our fearless leader on Below Deck Med season one. What a compassionate human being he was.

“He will be missed dearly. Sending love to his family and those lives who he touched…I know I will miss him.”

Below Deck season nine continues on November 23 on Bravo, Hayu and Peacock in the USA. A UK release date has not been confirmed.
