After Chadwick Boseman‘s passing, fans were curious about the future of the Black Panther and what is in store for T’Challa in the MCU. Although Marvel Studios announced that they wouldn’t recast the character, they still plan to move forward with the sequel.
This likely means that unless Marvel decides to retire the character completely, they would have to pass down the role to someone else. The option to scrap the character, however, seems unlikely since the franchise has only begun.
Fortunately, the franchise’s first installment gave fans many potential characters who could pick the King’s mantle. Marvel has been economical with the details about who the next Black Panther would be, and fans are now wondering whether the studio would be able to keep the details secret for long.
Recasting T’Challa might be more challenging than most people think
When Black Panther premiered, it broke entertainment history by being one of the first superhero flicks with an almost all-Black cast and crew. The film was also a box office hit, and critics and audiences loved it. Although Boseman had a flourishing career before his appearance in the show, his role as T’Challa in the MCU engraved his legacy in stone.
Unfortunately, the star passed away in 2020 after a long battle with cancer. The world mourned him and still does to date, but the show has to go on, which brings the question, who will replace Boseman as Black Panther?
Boseman delivered an exemplary performance as the titular superhero exuding a level of charm and diplomacy mixed with selflessness and combative skills. His performance seemingly made it difficult for another to walk in his shoes.
T’Challa is, without a doubt, one of the most crucial characters in the comics. He has his footing in many of the universe’s storylines, and his story is just starting. This means that there is plenty of room to grow the character.
Will there be a new Black Panther, or will Marvel retire the character
The MCU is full of surprises, and it’s not uncommon for them to decide on an unconventional way of giving fans what they want while staying true to Boseman’s legacy. Marvel fans have expressed their interest in seeing another character from the first movie take up the mantle.
This is not an uncommon practice in the MCU, as fans have previously seen Steve Rogers step away from his Captain America role and give his shield to Falcon. Wakanda has very viable candidates who can take up the part comfortably. Most fans, however, think it’s time for the women of Wakanda to rise to the occasion. The leading candidates for the Black Panther role, according to some fans, are Shuri, Nakia, and Okoye.
A few fans have suggested some male characters who also seem like suitable candidates for the job. Characters such as M’baku and W’kabi have shown a grand alliance with T’Challa in the past and understand the responsibility of being King.
Will Marvel be able to hold off on the character’s identity for long? Fans are torn
Ever since Boseman’s passing and the announcement of the flick’s sequel, Marvel has given its fans breadcrumbs to go on when it comes to who the new BP will be. Fans on Reddit are torn about whether or not the Studios will be able to keep the character’s identity a secret.
Some fans reckoned that Marvel would hold off announcing the new BP until the movie’s release, but others believe they might reveal the news much earlier. One fan reasoned that the producers might divide T’Challa’s responsibility among different characters since T’Challa was a complex person.
