The Larkins has gone down a huge hit since it started airing on ITV and the escapist series featured a star-studded cast. Bradley Walsh was joined by Joanna Scanlan as wife Ma Larkin and Sabrina Bartlett as daughter Mariette. Walsh and other stars of the show revealed whether a second season will follow.
Is there a season 2 of The Larkins?
The Larkins has now come to an end with an emotional final episode and the latest adaptation of The Darling Buds of May was a huge hit.
Fans can now look forward to the Christmas special, which is expected to air at the end of December.
Excited viewers are keen to know whether the series will continue, and the stars of the show have addressed its future.
Ahead of the show’s launch, Bradley Walsh said how he would love to return for another series.
Speaking to Express.co.uk and other media, he said: “Well to be fair, it would be great but I can’t keep going out and buying new clothes that are bigger.
“We have got to calm down on the eating, you have now got to go and live somewhere by the sea in The Larkins and have a Mediterranean diet.”
This comes after he revealed he had put on eight pounds in weight after eating all the home-cooked food on set.
The Chase star went on to praise the cast, saying: “I love it, I think it’s brilliant.”
Director Andy De Emmony said the Christmas special was a great way to write into a second season.
He added: “Seeing these characters now developed over the series, to be able to write for them, it feels like a really strong script in terms of character.
“It’s a very funny kind of script but having the hindsight of knowing the characters now and being able to write into the second series has been great, the script is wonderful.”
Simon Nye, who wrote the uplifting drama, said the series has been modernized to cater to a new kind of audience.
Opening up to the media, he said: “Modern viewers are different from viewers even thirty years ago and so there’s more plot.
“We have even widened it to kind of show the social context, if you like, of the village.
“And added some characters and it moves along. The first book is what we are covering in the first six episodes.
“So we have created a whole world and added what was there and it’s modern in the sense that it moves along perhaps more quickly than 30 years ago.
“And we have filled it with lovely character actors, there’s so much great acting on the show. There’s lots of joy.”
There are five Darling Buds of May books in total, so there is plenty of scope for future seasons.
If the creators are dealing with one book per season, there could be at least five instalments in the series.
The original ITV series was first broadcast in 1991 and it aired for a total of three seasons.
Fans will be interested to see whether the cast and creators of the new adaptation are able to push beyond the original format.
They took to Twitter to express their excitement, with Niknaklady saying: “Please please tell me there will be a 2nd series of #TheLarkins.
“Brilliant cast, lovely scenery and it brightened up my grey evenings.”
Chazzbat added: “Ah’ve absolutely luved #TheLarkins. It’s a joyous TV show that lifts ma hert.
“Ah’m gonnae miss it brichtenin up ma Sunday nichts. Ah cannae wait fer series 2.” [Sic]
