Virgin River season three dropped on Netflix back in July and since then, fans have been left wondering about the future of the series. The third season ended on a major cliffhanger, inviting the possibility of more seasons to come. But, many viewers are concerned the streaming platform may have cancelled the show ahead of season four.

Did Netflix cancel Virgin River?

Virgin River has always had a quick turnaround between seasons, with the gap between seasons two and three being just seven months.

It has been nearly five months since season three premiered, leaving many fans wondering where season four is.

While Netflix has been quiet on updates for the show, viewers can rest assured it has not been cancelled.

In fact, Netflix is doubling down on the show, confirming development not only on season four but season five as well.

These will be shot back-to-back, once again giving the show the quick development cycles fan have come to expect.

Filming on season four is well underway, though so far Netflix has not confirmed the release date for the season.

Season four could be further along in development than it may seem, with Jack star Martin Henderson sharing a recent update on Instagram.

Henderson wrote: “Doing a little postproduction work on #virginriver season 4. Making sure it’s all smooth and satisfying for the best fans EVER!

“Y’all have a lovely weekend wherever you find yourselves.” (sic)

It will release in 2022, with season five expected either late 2022 or 2023.

If this is the case, it could mean 2022 has two seasons of the show, making the future of the series very bright.

Inspired by the Robyn Carr novel series of the same name, there is plenty of material the showrunners can pull from.

There is in fact a staggering amount of story the show can cover, with 25 books released in the book series so far.

The last book, Return to Virgin River, was released in October 2021.

The difference between the books and the show is that the novel series doesn’t just focus on Jack and Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge).

While they feature heavily throughout the series, other couples take the limelight in later instalments.

The show may choose to follow a similar journey, though Jack and Mel’s story is far from finished.

Season three kept to tradition, ending with a major cliffhanger that could throw their relationship into doubt.

After asking Mel to marry him, Jack was stunned to find out that she was pregnant.

Initially overjoyed by the news, the moment was shattered when Mel revealed she wasn’t sure who the baby’s father was.

All will be revealed in seasons four and five, with their relationship now in the balance.

Virgin River seasons 1-3 are available to watch exclusively on Netflix.
