Love Island’s Francesca Allen found herself at the centre of her first media storm this week, following claims she called Caroline Flack a ‘dirty paedo’ years before entering the show.
While Francesca was wasting time with Curtis Pritchard in Love Island, she was unaware that outside a tweet from a supposed school friend was blowing up the internet, claiming to have heckled the presenter over her relationship with Harry Styles, who was a 17-year-old boy band star 12 years Caroline’s junior at the time.
The post made by a pal of Francesca’s read: ‘Highligh of the dayyy seeing Caroline Flack and calling herrr a dirtyy pedo withhhh @francesca_allen hahaha (sic).’
In turn, when the pair came face to face for the first time during Sunday night’s Aftersun, viewers were expecting everything under the sun to hit the fan. Instead, they got a friendly hug and some gossip from the villa. Not that any of that stopped reports Caroline snubbed the 23-year-old.
‘I was really surprised,’ Francesca revealed to Metro.co.uk when she saw stories of a feud with Flackers. ‘When I was in the villa I didn’t know any of this was going on so when I met her she was really kind, she was just like, “Are you ok?”
‘It was a school person, it wasn’t even me – I didn’t even say those things. It was so many years ago,’ the clothing store manager insisted.
‘Those words never came out of my mouth and that tweet wasn’t even from me so I’m not bothered by it. I know Caroline was lovely towards me, we had a drink in the bar afterwards.
‘She didn’t even bring it up because it’s not even an issue. She was just really lovely and kind.
‘Soon after I came into the villa I had to make a decision when I didn’t think it was my place to have an opinion and possibly make a life-changing decision for a couple. I did really struggle and she made me feel really comfortable.’
Francesca’s first ever televised interview was with Caroline, and then she gaffed it.
‘I was genuinely embarrassed,’ she chuckled. ‘It was my first interview, and [producers] told me beforehand that I had to stay seated so when she stood up I automatically stood and she was doing the right thing by walking through and then a producer was like, “Sit down!” I was just learning, it was my first interview.’
But Caroline couldn’t have been kinder.
‘I bumped into her in the shop beforehand and she was complimenting me on my hair, and it was my first interview so she was like, “Don’t be nervous!”
She was just really lovely. She understands for all of us it’s all new. She made me really comfortable.’
In a rare move, Caroline actually addressed yesterday’s drama on Twitter to her 1.9million followers.
‘As you know … I hate commenting on stuff,’ she posted. ‘I didn’t snub Francesca .. in fact quite the opposite .. made her feel very welcome as soon as she got to the studio.
‘I don’t hold grudges.. and the wellbeing of our islanders is important to me. Thought she was a great islander.’
Love Island continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2.
