Fantastic Beasts 3 delayed as Johnny Depp is axed

It’s been revealed that Fantastic Beasts 3 has been delayed until 2022 following the news that Johnny Depp has been axed from the franchise.

Fans of the Harry Potter spin-off were expecting to see Fantastic Beasts in cinemas on November 12 2021 as that release date featured on posters.

However, Deadline now reports that Warner Bros. have pushed back the third installment to July 15 2022. It’s the first time a Fantastic Beasts movie will be released during the summer but it does follow suit of Harry Potter movies such as Order of the Phoenix, Half Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows Part 2.

Last week, Depp announced that he had been asked to quit the Fantastic Beasts franchise after losing his court case against The Sun’s publishers over an article which labelled him a ‘wife beater’.

Announcing his resignation, Depp – who played Grindelwald – said in a written statement: ‘Firstly, I’d like to thank everybody who has gifted me with their support and loyalty.

‘I have been humbled and moved by your many messages of love and concern, particularly over the last few days. Secondly, I wish to let you know that I have been asked to resign by Warner Bros from my role as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts and I have respected and agreed to that request.’

He went on to confirm his plans to appeal the court’s ‘surreal’ verdict.

‘The surreal judgement of the court in the UK will not change my fight to tell the truth and I confirm that I plan to appeal,’ Depp stated.

‘My resolve remains strong and I intend to prove that the allegations against me are false. My life and career will not be defined by this moment in time.

‘Thank you for reading.’

Warner Bros. then released their own statement confirming the role of Grindelwald will be recast and fans are calling on Colin Farrell, who portrayed the character in the original Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, to return to the franchise.

Depp took over as Grindelwald in 2018’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
