The long-awaited film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hit Broadway musical, In the Heights, is now showing in theaters and available for streaming online at HBO Max.
Written by Miranda and playwright Quiara Alegría Hudes, the original stage production received four Tony awards, including Best Musical, and a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album in 2008. Directed by Crazy Rich Asians helmer Jon Chu, the film adaptation stars Hamilton‘s Anthony Ramos alongside Corey Hawkins, Melissa Barrera, Jimmy Smits, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Stephanie Beatriz, and Olga Merediz. The story follows bodega owner Usnavi (Ramos), his tight-knit Latinx community in New York City’s Washington Heights neighborhood, and the dreams they have for better lives.
“In the Heights fuses Lin-Manuel Miranda’s music and lyrics with director Jon M. Chu’s storytelling to capture a world very much of its place, but universal in its experience,” according to the synopsis.
While originally scheduled to release last June, the production saw delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, pushing back its official release date a full year, but the wait appears to be well worth it. Officially announcing its pushback last April, Chu wrote on Twitter, “After long conversations &sleepless nights of uncertainty, we have decided the best time to release #InTheHeightsMovie is next summer when people will feel the MOST comfortable celebrating in a movietheater TOGETHER.”
He continued, “I know it’s much later than we wanted, but #InTheHeightsMovie didn’t take 10 years to get made only to be left in half empty theaters w/out the crowd it deserves!! So thank you 4 ur patience & faith…and when we get through this time & the movie comes out we are throwing a HUGE EFFING PARTY LIKE YOUVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE.”
