If you’re thinking about deleting your Facebook account, you may want to reconsider because Jada Pinkett-Smith’s Red Table Talk show on the platform’s Watch section has been picking up steam since its debut in March 2018. Coming across as a sort of modern-day King Arthur, Pinkett-Smith is joined by her mother, Adrienne Banfield-Jones, and her daughter, Willow Smith. The two act as her Knights of the Round Table, which coincidentally, just so happens to be red. Hollywood A-listers join them at the table to discuss the various moral dilemmas that plague their lives and to confess to some juicy gossip. In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Pinkett-Smith described her series perfectly: “Whether it’s empowering people to have the lives they want … we’re ensuring people have a voice.”
While it’s awesome to get some inside info on our favorite celebs, we also gain insight to the Smith family too, as all members of the clan have made appearances. Read on to hear the best buzz from RTT and find out who squashed their beef on camera, which Smith made some not-so-great dating choices, and which member of this famous fam got real about their particular addiction. These are Jada Pinkett-Smith’s biggest Red Table Talk confessions.
Keeping up with this huge Kardashian scandal
The Kardashian-centric scandal involving pro basketball star Tristan Thompson and model Jordyn Woods erupted in February 2019 dragged out for months in an online battlefield. Need a refresher? The gossip was this: Khloe Kardashian’s baby daddy, Thompson (who already has a reputation for infidelity), was caught at his own house party in Los Angeles allegedly cheating with Woods, who was none other than Kylie Jenner’s BFF. The outrage was immediate, sending the Kardashians into a fury, while Jenner kicked her former bestie out of her guest house. Woods may have had only one place to go to tell her side of the story: Jada Pinkett-Smith’s Red Table Talk. Woods is friends with Pinkett-Smith’s son, Jaden Smith, so the ladies already knew each other to some degree.
On RTT, Woods tried to set things straight about what did and didn’t happen with Thompson at that infamous party. “Never once was I giving him a lap dance, making out with him,” she said. Woods admitted that she shouldn’t have gone to the party, but maintained her innocence. She claimed the NBA player did give her a kiss as she was leaving. Afterward, Woods supposedly called the KarJenners. “I was honest about being there, but I wasn’t honest about the actions that had taken place,” Woods admitted. Considering Khloe lashed out at Woods on Twitter immediately after the episodes, this Red Table Talk confession was a biggie, but it may not mend any fences for Woods.
Jada squashed a 17-year-old feud with Gabrielle Union
Jada Pinkett-Smith doesn’t shy away from talking about her past demons. In an episode titled “Girls Trippin'” the actress explained that while working on the “girlfriend relationships” portion of her show, actress Gabrielle Union kept popping up into her mind. Why? “Gabrielle and I were never really girlfriends; we were great associates. At some point, that dissolved and for 17 years we have not really spoken,” Pinkett-Smith confessed. Weird, right?
Although neither of the A-listers have spoken much about their apparent falling out, Union did offer some insight on the Today show (via People) in May 2018. “Back in the day, neither one of us knew originally what took place back then, but the people that we had around us were like, ‘Well, you know how she feels about you’ … then it was like, ‘Okay, girl, bye’ for 17 years.”
Jada invited Union to appear on Red Table Talk and revealed that she had finally apologized to the Bring it On star. “It felt so good on the phone with you to even just go, ‘Hey, I’m sorry that I didn’t even take the time to talk to you, you know?’ And then I had to just apologize, and just thinking to myself, ‘Damn, Jada! That was some petty ass s**t!'”
Willow Smith opened up about her greatest loss
It seems that Willow Smith wasn’t as carefree as the world thought when she released her single, “Whip My Hair,” in 2010 — when she was only 9 years old. During a Red Table Talk episode, Jada asked her daughter to discuss her biggest loss. What Willow revealed was totally unexpected: She detailed the dark place she found herself in after the global pandemonium that accompanied her hit song.
According to Billboard, the track peaked at No. 11 on the Hot 100 chart and garnered a whopping 1.6 million downloads. The youngest Smith was immediately shot to superstardom — Bruce Springsteen even covered the tune on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Yet as she told her mother and grandmother on RTT, Willow lost her “sanity at one point” during it all. “It was after that whole ‘Whip My Hair’ thing, and I had just stopped doing singing lessons and I was kind of just in this gray area of … Is there anything I can do besides this? … I was, like, cutting myself and doing crazy things.”
Luckily, Willow found her way out of that dark place. “One night I was like, this is actually psychotic and after that I just stopped,” she revealed. Considering she kept the secret from the entire family, this situation could have gone from bad to worse.
Looking for love and 'Common' ground on Red Table Talk
Rapper and actor Common got real about his quest for love during an episode of Red Table Talk, discussing how his past hardships and destructive cycles hindered himself from getting married.
The performer revealed that he’d been abused as a child — one of multiple hardships and challenges he addressed in his memoir, Let Love Have the Last Word. In the book, Common also gets personal about his past relationship with legendary crooner Erykah Badu. Speaking to People about the memoir, he revealed that his breakup with Badu was heartbreaking. “With Erykah Badu, that was my first love where you’re just open and floating. When we split … I was in a haze, just going through the motions.”
On RTT, “The People” rapper revealed that he is finally ready to settle down: “I would like to be a husband. For a long time, I was … like ‘Do I really want to be a husband, or am I doing this because this is what society says to me?'” Having found a seat at the table, it looks like Common is finally practicing some proper self-love.
Jada and Will Smith's 'betrayal of the heart'
There’s no denying that husband and wife Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith are celeb couple goals. Together for more than 20 years, they’re clearly doing something right — along with constantly dodging dirt about infidelity and swinging. When the topic of cheating came up during a Red Table Talk episode, you best believe fans tuned in.
Sitting down with her mom, Adrienne Banfield-Jones, Jada opened up about her marriage to Will, explaining that while they’ve been faithful to one another, there have been other, unconventional betrayals. “I’m asked a lot about, ‘Is there infidelity with your relationship with Will,’ and I’m like, no, but there have been other betrayals of the heart that have been far bigger than I could even think in regards to an infidelity situation,” she said.
Perhaps the secret to their successful union is the fact that they’ve stopped looking at marriage in a conventional sense. In another episode of RTT, the Gotham actress revealed that she and her beau have even stopped celebrating momentous occasions, such as their anniversary and New Year’s Eve. “It’s more of a life partnership,” she explained. “We don’t really celebrate that day — You know what I’m saying? — anymore in that sense because the context of our union is totally different.” Considering this glamorous duo has been married since 1997, we applaud whatever works for the power couple.
Jada 'goes with the flow' when it comes to her kids dating
Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith seem like rather liberal parents. From not disciplining their kids in a conventional sense to allowing them full creative expression, the duo raised children with some pretty good heads on their shoulders, but while there may not be much cause for concern, the topic of having your kids start dating is always a touchy one for parents. Pinkett-Smith decided to answer some big questions about parenting during a Red Table Talk Q&A.
When asked about her kids’ dating decisions, Jada said daughter Willow Smith’s “choices have been spectacular.” What about her son, Jaden Smith? Although Jada didn’t point any fingers, the star did reveal some cryptic disapproval. “You got to go with the flow,” she said. “Your kids aren’t always going to date people that you love.”
Hardcore Jaden fans suspected that his mama was possibly referring to her son’s relationship with model Sarah Snyder. The starlet found herself in some trouble in 2015, when she was arrested for allegedly stealing a $15,995 Hermes handbag. Although the charges were dropped, we suspect Jaden’s parents weren’t too thrilled about that.
Jaden and Willow had big issues with their parents
While it’s easy to believe that Jada Pinkett-Smith and Will Smith aren’t just regular parents — they’re cool parents — there has been some trouble in their household, too. Willow and Jaden Smith made big confessions to their mom on an episode of Red Table Talk.
When Jada asked her kids what they thought of their upbringing, Willow got real: “I only have one terrible experience, which is ‘Whip My Hair.’ … You and daddy should have been like, ‘OK, we value her musical growth and knowledge more than her popularity.'” Willow wasn’t the only one feeling the pressure of popularity. “I went through the same thing that Willow went through with ‘Whip My Hair’ with Karate Kid,” Jaden dished.
Jada broke down on the show, fighting back tears and sharing a confession of her own. “When you become a parent, you have these huge ideals, even for yourself, because we all are coming into parenting with our own childhood traumas. And you’re hoping you can fix all that through your own rearing of your children, and you can’t,” she said. “Your kids are gonna have their burdens. And even though I see how it might have hurt you, it’s what I knew.”
Ciara's 'beauty marks'
A lot of female empowerment went down during Ciara’s appearance on Red Table Talk. When she appeared on the program to discuss her failed — and very public — relationship with rapper Future, Ciara also confessed to turning her “relationship scars into beauty marks.” Beauty Marks also happens to be the title of her 2019 album — a connection that wasn’t lost on Jada Pinkett-Smith.
“The idea of your album being called Beauty Marks, that really hit me,” the host said. “As we come and go deeper into our womanhood, how we realize everything that we’ve been through, nothing is wasted.” When Ciara was asked what fueled the idea for the album, Ciara confessed that becoming a single mom was the catalyst. “I would have moments … I’d be crying because I am not in the happiest place and it hurts what I’m going through … I grew up with my mom and my dad being together, the idea of it being mommy and daddy that made a baby. And then all of a sudden you’re living your life in front of the world, it’s a whole other layer.”
Considering Ciara is now in a loving relationship with her hubby, NFL star Russell Wilson, has welcomed a son into the world, and has another hit record under her belt, we’d say things for this singer has successfully turned the tables.
Jada Pinkett-Smith reveals a NSFW addiction
Jada Pinkett-Smith takes the cake for being an open and honest mother — and daughter — when she decided to bring up the topic of porn during an Red Table Talk episode with Willow Smith and Adrienne Banfield-Jones. The gossip started way before the ladies even sat down at the show’s infamous red table — Jada was spitting statistics while the trio was still in hair and makeup. “Forty million people watch porn on a daily basis,” Jada noted, before Willow quickly interjected, “Low-key, I’m down for the expensive looking stuff.” Uh, what? Banfield-Jones quietly quipped, “I guess I’m not looking at the right stuff,” Jada confessed that she wished she could offer the two a bit more help in that arena. “If I was still on my porn game, I would be able to show you some good porn,” she said. “Back in the day, I had a little porn addiction.”
While her claim may sound benign, Jada delved deeper into the matter when the women sat down for the RTT episode. “I actually feel like I was using ‘addiction’ a little lightly. Maybe I will say now that I had an unhealthy relationship to porn,” Jada revealed. She said her addiction was “filling an emptiness” she felt emotionally. Clearly, the starlet has worked through those challenges, considering she and hubby Will Smith openly talk about their sex life when the mood strikes.
Jada's marriage wasn't always a Hollywood fairy tale
It’s no secret Jada Pinkett-Smith and Will Smith have had to defend their marriage against rumor-mill vultures over the years. What’s the best way to squash the goss? Talk about it yourself, which is exactly what the duo did on an episode of Red Table Talk.
The A-list stars confessed to troubles in their marriage, admitting that they had to “destroy” parts of it in order to come out stronger together. “We broke up within our marriage and got back together again and had to rebuild with new rules and something way completely different,” Will said. “I took off for two years, I worked on myself, I read 50 books on marriage, relationships, and behavioral psychology. I shut down for two entire years to see what was I doing wrong.”
The couple cleared those hurdles and is now stronger than ever. Little things, such as taking “ten days out of the year” to do what the other wants apparently keep the connection fresh. As for all the gossip? Will decided to set the record straight at the end of the RTT episode. “Let’s clear some rumors, just to have it on record. We’ve never been Scientologists. We’ve never been swingers.” His wife then quipped, “That’s a very specific lifestyle!”
Jada Pinkett-Smith talks sexual escapades at the table
Jada Pinkett-Smith’s June 2019 episode of Red Table Talk dove into the topic of polyamory — and she came across the idea in a totally unconventional way. Her daughter, Willow Smith, actually approached her about it! Jada discussed that RTT episode on Jimmy Kimmel Live: “It’s a throuple that Willow was actually following on Instagram. That’s how it all came to be. She became very curious about this whole polyamory thing.” When Kimmel asked if that was something Willow would be interested in, Jada said, “Possibly. I don’t know. Listen, she’s 18. Who the heck knows what’s going to go down?”
Pinkett-Smith got personal about her sexual past at the red table. “I had a threesome once. I was very, very young. Like early, early 20s. I didn’t like it,” she said. As her daughter cringed in the wake of her mom’s confession, Jada went on: “It just didn’t have the level of intimacy. But I tried it once and I was like, ‘Well, that’s not for me … But I always think if I was in love with two people, that’s another level.”
The revelation raised eyebrows considering Jada and Will have been plagued in the past by rumors about swinging. During an episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, the Girls Trip actress addressed that chatter by simply declaring: “Yo, I wish!”
Confessing to controversial biases on Red Table Talk
One of Jada Pinkett-Smith’s most sensitive subjects to date on Red Table Talk was an unfiltered discussion on racial biases that affect women to this day. Telling her viewers the episode would be “as unfiltered as possible,” the mother-of-two got introspective about her own biases, openly admitting it’s something she needs to work on. “I do have my own biases, specifically to blonde women. Blonde hair on white women just triggers me,” she confessed. “I’ve had to catch myself. … I do remember being teased by white women in regards to my hair, how I looked, feeling belittled. I was going to do an interview with this blonde woman, I thought twice about it, because of how she looked.”
As Jada, Willow Smith, and Adrienne Banfield-Jones continued to discuss the topic on RTT, Jada declared, “I feel like we, as women, should know better. I really do, because we’re women. Because of the struggles we have as women.” Slamming her firsts on the table she added, “There should be a natural understanding and familiarity of our struggle. And then to be part of creating more of a struggle for a woman, to me, is criminal.” With both her daughter and mother nodding their heads, it’s clear that Jada hit a nerve and continues to do so with her thought-provoking and genuinely open-hearted series.
