Leigh-Anne Pinnock became visibly emotional during tonight’s live final of Little Mix: The Search while praising girlband Nostalia for their diversity.
Following the first of Nostalia’s two performances in the final, during which they performed TLC’s No Scrubs and Shackles (Praise You) by Mary Mary, it was time for Perrie Edwards, Jade Thirlwall and Leigh-Anne to give their verdict on the performance.
Out of the three judges on the panel tonight, with Jesy Nelson absent from the show, Perrie was the first to deliver her critique.
After her came Leigh-Anne, who – after waiting a moment – teared up as she as she explained the importance of Nostalia being on the show.
‘This group is just so powerful and not just because of your powerhouse vocals and how amazing you girls are but the fact that my little niece can watch her TV screen and see girls that look like her. That’s so important!’ she said.
The singer then added: ‘There is a space in the music industry for you girls.’
Several Little Mix: The Search viewers said they felt the same as Leigh-Anne.
‘When Leigh-Anne Said that her niece can watch Nostalia and see that someone looks like her there makes me cry like literally that’s how I feel as well,’ one person said.
‘It’s so nice to see black women like me in Nostalia.’
‘Not Leigh-Anne crying causing me to cry,’ another tweeted.
‘She’s so right, I’m so happy there’s a female diverse group full of representation. WE’RE VOTING FOR NOSTALIA TO WIN.’
Earlier today, it was announced that Jesy would not be appearing in the final of the competition, with a representative for Little Mix saying in a statement that the singer is ‘unwell’.
Jesy will also not join her bandmates as Perrie, Jade and Leigh-Anne host tomorrow’s MTV EMAs.
The final of Little Mix: The Search is currently showing on BBC One.
