Camilla Tominey explained why she wasn’t impressed with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s appearances on US TV ahead of the Duchess of Sussex’s interview with Ellen DeGeneres. The royal expert told This Morning hosts Phillip Schofield and Josie Gibson she felt they would be able to spread their messages better as part of the Royal Family.
She explained: “It’s not getting the right headline, is it?
“If they’re going to push their charitable endeavours and they’re positioning themselves, aren’t they?
“As a kind of the Obamas, Bill and Belinda Gates, George Clooney and Amal, that’s their positioning.
“They actually have to do something. They can’t just keep giving interviews.
“Because President Obama served two terms in office, Amal Clooney is a human-rights lawyer.
“And Bill and Melinda Gates have kind of cured Malaria in the developing world.
“There needs to be a bit more substance.”
Camilla later added: “I suppose the argument against that, is particularly when it comes to Harry and Meghan.
“The big question mark is ‘Could they have been more effective within the Royal Family?’
“Because they’re outside of major events like the COP26 summit. They’re speaking from the sidelines.
“And actually you’re quite powerful within the institution. They had quite an amazing stage and platform and now they’re on Ellen.”
In the same interview, fellow guest Matthew Wright explained he didn’t understand what the Royal Family did for the country.
He ranted: “Where does the money come from? It comes from us. We pay for their houses.”
Phillip explained the Royal Family attract tourists to the UK, arguing: “The royalists will say ‘Look how much money is raised when the tourists can now come back.’
“How much people come back to see our royal roots, history and the fact their flag might be flying outside Buckingham Palace. Isn’t that what they do?”
But Matthew demanded to know: “Can anyone produce the figure that shows how much money the Royal Family brings into the UK?
“I’ve been looking at it for 30 years for it and no such figure exists.”
He continued: “t is quoted by royalists but there is no sum.
“America does very well with tourism, they don’t have a Royal Family.
“The idea that the Royal Family brings things in, I think is a myth.”
This Morning airs weekdays on ITV at 10am.
