Outer Banks recently aired its second instalment. The Netflix adventure series gave viewers a look into the fate of John B (played by Chase Stokes) and Sarah Cameron (Madelyn Cline) as they continued to escape the police. However, the closing credit left fans in tears, as it featured a moving tribute to star Carol Sutton.
Memaw (played by Carol Sutton) was introduced as Pope Haywerd’s (Jonathan Daviss) great-grandmother.
She was featured on-screen when Pope visited her at a care home, looking for answers about a mysterious key and its connection to their family.
After discovering it in his grandmother’s home and tucked away in her ceiling, he decided to probe her with questions.
Despite her initial hesitancy, Memaw later revealed the key belonged to Denmark Tanny, their ancestor.
While the show’s production was filming season two between August 2020 and April 2021, it was revealed Carol had sadly passed away.
The actress contracted Covid-19 halfway through filming and passed away from complications.
The mother-of-two died on December 10, 2020 aged 76 – just seven days after her birthday.
During the 1960s, Carol performed at the Dashiki Project Theatre, where she was well known for her roles on stage.
In 1974, she made her on-screen debut with The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman and gained popularity after roles on Steel Magnolias, Monster’s Ball and Ray.
Carol even received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012, for her work in hometown New Orleans.
Outer Banks paid tribute to Carol in the credits by including a title card which said: “In Loving Memory of Carol Banks.”
That episode titled My Druthers was the first time many fans were made aware of her death, so they took to Twitter to share their reaction and post their own tributes.
One shocked viewer tweeted: “Carol Sutton passed away in the middle of filming Outer Banks, my god.”
“The tribute they paid to Carol Sutton on outer banks was so sad rip,” another wrote.
One tweeted: “I didn’t know Carol Sutton until now, watching Outer Banks. She seemed to be a wonderful actress, rest in peace.”
“Wow the end of the sixth episode of Outer Banks along with a memorial for Carol – I was sad,” a fourth added.
As well as Outer Banks, Carol had also starred in other TV shows including, Lovecraft Country and American Horror Story: Coven and The Last Exorcism.
In 2020, she also appeared in Messiah, In the Bag and Freedom’s Path where she played Caddy.
When Carol wasn’t performing on stage or in front of the camera, she volunteered her expertise to students as an acting teacher in her hometown of New Orleans.
All episodes of Outer Banks are available to stream on Netflix.
