Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) has had a lot to deal with in EastEnders as of late — what with both daughter Louise (Tilly Keeper) and wife Sharon (Letitia Dean) being pregnant, as well as Ben (Max Bowden) having proven to be a thorn in his side — but, in spite of all these challenges, it’s the Slaters that are on his mind in the coming episodes.
After Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) seemingly absconded with his £50,000, Phil was fuming, to say the least. As a result, he took his frustrations out on Kat (Jessie Wallace) and Stacey (Lacey Turner) — despite the two women having repeatedly claimed to have never seen head nor tail of his cash.
With a truckload of other things to worry about, Phil hasn’t had much time to think about his stolen funds lately, but that all changes next week when he spies Stacey with a brand new phone. Convinced that the Slaters have the money once more, he asks Shirley (Linda Henry) to find him proof — and promises that, if she manages to do so, he’ll give her a cut of the cash.
Unable to turn down such a lucrative offer, Shirley accepts the deal and begins her investigation — and her interests are piqued when she sees Jean (Gillian Wright) sporting some new clothes.
Later in the week, Shirley accompanies Jean on her next visit to the hospital — during which the Slater matriarch opens up about the ongoing feud between Kat and Stacey, before inadvertently hinting that this rivalry is the result of a disagreement over money.
Shirley now has plenty of reasons to believe that the missing money is in the Slaters’ possession, but will she relay this information to Phil?
If so, she’ll be betraying Jean’s confidence and, what with Jean already having enough on her plate, she doesn’t need the added stress of having to deal with Phil’s demands. What’s more, Jean would no doubt be upset with Shirley for stabbing her in the back — especially during such a difficult time in her life.
But with a cut of £50,000 up for grabs, can Shirley afford to be worried about such a thing?
