Sarah Jessica Parker Wanted To Quit 'Sex and the City' After Filming the Pilot

Sarah Jessica Parker is synonymous with Sex and the City. She’s even reprising her role as Carrie Bradshaw in a Sex and the City reboot. However, the actor came close to not playing the shoe-obsessed writer who lived in New York City.

‘Sex and the City’ premiered in 1998

Parker made her debut as Carrie in June 1998 when Sex and the City first aired on HBO. The program followed Carrie as she navigated the city’s dating scene and wrote about it.

By her side were Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon), Charlotte York (Kristin Davis), and Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall), her three closest friends. Over lunch or Cosmos at the trendiest bar of the moment, they’d discuss their lives and most often, their romantic relationships.

Sex and the City ran for six seasons before ending in February 2004. By that time the show had become a hit. The cast had also become household names along with their characters. The success of the series eventually led to a Sex and the City movie in 2008 and a sequel in 2010.

Sarah Jessica Parker ‘wanted to get out’ of ‘Sex and the City’ after filming the pilot

Parker once considered backing out of the HBO series. After filming the pilot episode of Sex and the City she thought about not signing on for the show.

As the actor told The Sun in 2010, according to Mental Floss, she felt uncomfortable with the amount of nudity on the program — Parker had a no-nudity clause in her contract — and all of the sexual content.

“I had the maturity to control my panic about the whole series and what it meant,” she said. “At one point, after the pilot show of Sex and the City was made and they wanted me to sign up for the series, I wanted to get out of it.”

She continued, saying the sexual nature of the show made her uncomfortable.

“I was not comfortable with nude scenes, scenes with sex toys, or vulgar language—so I did not do any,” Parker explained. “My character, Carrie, kissed a lot of men—but that’s as far as it went.”

The ‘Sex and the City’ star has ‘always’ had a no-nudity clause

Even though there aren’t many details on the Sex and the City reboot, fans can expect absolutely zero nude scenes from Parker. As she told The Hollywood Reporter in November 2016, she’s “always” had a no-nudity clause in her contract.

“I’ve always had one, and it’s apropos of absolutely nothing,” she said. “Some people have a perks list and they are legendary. They have to have white candles in their room. I don’t have a crazy list like that. I’ve just always had [a no-nudity clause].”
