NBC’s The Blacklist will soon be returning to the streaming platform with a ninth instalment of the crime series. After the shocking season finale, a new trailer has been released, giving fans an insight into what’s to come – including a tense warning for Raymond ‘Red’ Reddington (played by James Spader)
The Blacklist’s thrilling trailer is exactly 15 seconds long and provided fans with an insight into how James is doing after Liz Keen’s (Megan Boone) death.
A very short glimpse revealed James was devastated by her death and clearly still in mourning.
As he could be heard saying: “After Elizabeth’s death there’s nothing.”
It also confirmed the two-year time jump, which TVLine previously revealed would see Red completely alone with the task force disbanded.
Liz’s death was unexpected and shocking for viewers and particularly heartbreaking for Red, as the two had formed a friendship after working together since season one.
He was also going to make her the successor of the criminal empire before she was struck by a gunman.
In fact, after receiving the first bullet, fans watched as Liz was on the mend and ready to take over – as Red revealed he was dying.
However, before she could sign any forms, she was shot and killed by another gunman, which left Red completely distraught.
Elsewhere in the trailer Agent Ressler (Diego Klattenhoff) made an appearance and issued a warning.
He said: “Liz died for what? The Blacklist. Whether she died in vain is up to you,” then Red was heard saying: “This journey isn’t over.”
Agent Park (Laura Sohn and Harold Cooper (Henry Lennix) also show in the trailer, but not as a team so there’s no telling if the crew will work together again.
Although Red immediately pulled out his gun and murdered the person who killed Liz, these warnings could suggest he’s after more than just blood.
After watching the trailer, other fans also seem to believe this is the case and took to Twitter to express their excitement for season nine.
A James Spader fan account tweeted: “New beginning. I wasn’t this excited in a very long time. Season 9 will be AMAZING!”
SpaderWorld shared a photo of Red and commented: “The new Raymond Reddington Can’t wait for Season 9!
“I see the blacklist is #6 on the Netflix top 10 right now and it’s about time!! That show is amazing and I can’t wait for season 9,” shared Philly.
The trailer also showed Red sporting a new look, with a completely shaved head.
In an interview, executive producer John Eisendrath, gave Entertainment Weekly a huge clue about the fate of the characters.
He revealed: “Liz’s death has had a profound effect on our characters is inevitable, but where they’ve landed in her absence is surprising and wide-ranging.”
Fans will have to tune into season nine, to see just what will happen to the team and if they will even get back together.
The Blacklist season 9 premieres on Thursday, October 21 on NBC. A UK release date is yet to be announced.
