Serena Joy Waterford (played by Yvonne Strahovski) and her husband Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) were one of the main establishers of Gilead on Hulu’s dystopian show and after his death, many fans questioned what Serena would do. Ahead of the release of The Handmaid’s Tale season five, the actress teased her character could go ahead with a political career

During a conversation with Deadline, showrunners and the cast of The Handmaid’s Tale were interviewed about the series.

When asked about Serena Joy’s fate in season five, actress Yvonne revealed: “I don’t really know which way they’re gonna go with Serena, but I keep imagining her moving forward.

“Frustratingly, for the audience in a capacity where she gets out and things work out and she gains some kind of political traction,” she explained.

Yvonne added: “Or something based off the fan group we saw her have with the Commander when people stepped out and were cheering for them.”

“I just, I think that would be a very frustrating portrayal, which would be interesting to watch,” she concluded.

Throughout the series, viewers got an insight into Serena and Fred’s life before Gilead in a series of flashback scenes.

Serena was an author and had released a novel called A Woman’s Place which encouraged women to submit to their “biological destiny” as mothers and child-bearers rather than pursue high-powered jobs or fulfilling careers.

During her book tour, she was met with hostility from the students at a university who protested against her controversial beliefs.

Serena had the full support of Fred, who was also keen to team up with his wife and establish Gilead.

As the patriarchal state began to take over America, Commanders who were also lawmakers used her writing to implement policies.

When Gilead gained power Serena was completely shut out of any political conversations about politics because she was a woman.

Even though some of the laws were her idea, because of her gender she was also banned from reading and later had her finger removed when she did so out of rebellion.

In season five, Fred and Serena were caught and held in custody, awaiting trial for their crimes in Gilead.

After one of their many court appearances, the couple were surprisingly met with a handful of fans with banners of support outside.

This confused viewers as their laws were filled with misogyny and only for the betterment of men, while women’s only role was to bear children.

This also took the pair by surprise and gave them a boost of confidence, however, Fred’s unexpected death had many questioning about where she would go next.

With Serena being pregnant, fans predicted she could return to Gilead to continue as a tribute to her husband.

Whereas others suggested she could completely put her old life behind her and continue to live in Canada as a free woman.

During a visit from a fellow Wife, Serena got a glimpse into what the future in Gilead could look like because her baby would belong to the state and because of the nature of the place, she could also face punishment.

Sadly, no release date for season five has been released, however, will be updated with new information.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 is available to stream on Hulu in the USA and airs Sundays on Channel 4 in the UK.
