The Only Way Is Essex is set to see some major changes sweep through the long-established reality series as a large number of cast members are being relegated to background cast.

The ITV bosses have decided to make a smaller number of core cast the main focus so the popular show can follow them through more areas in their lives.

The leads will be seen interacting with their friends and family more, and cameras will also focus in on their work-lives too.

What’s more, the cast will be able to explore more of their personal passions on-screen and the hope is that viewers will be allowed a window into their “real lives”.

A TOWIE spokesperson confirmed: "After more than 10 fabulous years following the lives of our ever-growing cast, TOWIE will be evolving with some changes.

“As it looks ahead to future series, focusing on a smaller group allows our cast more time to film their real lives,” they went on.

“[And] showing more of their personal passions and professions, alongside their strong bonds and dynamics with family and friends."

The show insisted the loss of the regular cast members will be keenly felt behind the scenes, but they will always be “part of the TOWIE family”.

“Those who won’t appear regularly on screen next series will always be part of the TOWIE family and we wholeheartedly thank them for sharing their lives with us in recent years,” the statement finished.

“As always, their wellbeing is of paramount importance to us and we will continue to offer welfare support if needed to all past and present TOWIE cast.
